On average, how long does it take african american hair to grow?

I've never gotten a haircut before. I"m 13 and i have to get my "split ends" cut. I've never had this done before, and people are saying they're going to have to cut at least 2 inches of my hair because that's how bad my split ends are.

I have to get this done no matter what. but can anyone tell me around how many weeks/months my hair might take to grow the two inches back?

Like a time frame?

Well, anytime your hair is curly (like ours) it may seem like a long time for it to grow back after its been cut. As our hair grows, it curls up and therefore seems short.

Take one of your curls and stretch it out. See how long your hair really is? Now let the curl go and look how short it looks! If you were to give every person with straight hair a tight, curly perm, their hair would look much shorter too.

Depending on how tightly curled the hair, those of us with natural curls may just have to wait a little longer to see a noticeable difference in length (especially if your hair is very tightly curled!).

But no worries!! Healthy hair is ALWAYS beautiful no matter the length!! So take good care of your locks!! Use a good detangler and carefully comb out kinks and knots. NEVER pull or force the comb through your hair. You'll cause breakage and your hair will take longer to grow because of the ends will keep breaking off. (On DRY HAIR, I like Johnson's NO MORE TANGLES spray detangler -- usually in baby care aisle).

Also, keep your hair clean and moisturized. African-American hair does NOT need to be washed everyday. Our hair tends to be a little drier than other people's hair. So usually a gentle wash once or twice a week will suffice. Use a GENTLE shampoo that moisturizes and detangles, and a good conditioner. And be very gentle with wet hair. Hair is weakest when wet!!

If your hair is a very coarse/kinky afro-texture, you may want to try John Freida's Frizz-Ease Extra Strength Formula (for kinky/coarse hair). Try this for a soft, wavy look: After washing, towel-dry hair. Split your hair in small sections (4-8 sections) all over your head. One section at a time, re-wet your hair (I use a little spray bottle of water) and use a little Frizz Ease. Gently comb out the section, and twist or braid it. (The Frizz Ease may make your hair dry and brittle! Before twisting, I use a little Profective Break-Free Daily Leave-In Strengthener, especially on the ends). Wear a satin sleep cap to bed. In the morning, use a little more Profective on the ends, then GENTLY undo the twists/braids and finger-comb. Your hair should be soft and wavy! (You may need to use a little detangle spray to undo the twists/braids).

6 months.

It's different for all people.

However, if you repeatedly trim a small amount of hair (like 1/4 inch or so every month) your hair will grow faster. When hair is stimulated by cutting, it grows more rapidly for a short period of time (about 5 weeks). So if you cut off 1/8 or 1/4 inch every month, you'll have a net benefit of hair growth.

It depends, all hair is different, people's bodies are different, however, getting your split ends cut, will make your hair healthier, thus growing faster. Make sure you keep it oiled, with a light, healthy oil, I recommend Tea Tree Oil and not giving it a lot of heat. These, and consistently brushing, will increase the health and growing power of your hair.

depends on your hair and how well you care for it. If you have really bad split ends your not caring for it as well as you should.

Properly cared for hair will grow quickly.

The people answering "6 months" are stupid. I got two inches cut off and my hair grew back in about two and a half months.

Though my hair does grow fast. It's safe to say it'll be four months at most.
