it's not really safe for anybody's hair but just as long as you don't over do it, not as much damage will be made.

i would go to a salon and ask if they have a safer type of hair dye, one with less harmful chemical ingredients so your hair will not get damaged. they might have some type of organic or natural dye, its worth a try to ask! good luck! :)

Your safe, just don't go cheapo. Go to a salon OR if your doing it yourself bye the good stuff. Either way get really nice shampoo and conditioner salon style to lock in moisture, over the counter brands won't be good for it!

Sure it is. Go for it girl! If your scared of the look, try Sun-In. When you apply it, you can control it. Remember to comb it through. You'll notice a definate difference. Have fun.

Yup, just don't high light hair if you permed you hair about 4-5 weeks ago....(I think that's the time limit...) or vis-sersa.

If that is all you do chemically yes. Other wise it is hard on the hair but why do it you have a beautiful color of hair work with a change of style in stead something versatile that you can change around. Have a good one:-)

Is highlights safe for african american hair.?

no, don't do it. it causes too much breakage and is not worth it cuz it only looks good for the first week and then your hair gets all short and dead looking once it starts breaking.

Highlights look OK on HO's

Here's the thing about highlights - how long do you want to keep them? Most women regardless of hair type usually love their initial highlights - the problem comes when its touch up time. Just like how you are not suppose to go over already permed hair when applying a retouch, you're not suppose to highlight already highlighted hair. But for some reason this happens a lot and this is where a lot of damage comes from. Find a stylist that does not practice overlapping and you should be ok.

Also make sure you want to maintain highlights for the long term. You can't just mysteriously dye them away and think that the damage the coloring has done won't show.

Honestly, if you want to protect your hair while trying out highlights I suggest getting a professional weave. With a professional weave you won't damage your hair, you'll get the look and when you get tired of it you can just rip it out and go back to your regular style. But do this only if you can afford it. Cheap weaves damage hair even more than overlapping.

well depends on if your doing it at home or going to a salon, because your hair stylist defenately would not do something bad to your hair of course they are hair color is made for everyone, but if your still suspicious just try to ask a hair stylist if they know what will work for you if they can damage your hair, and remeber bleach blonde high lights are not usually flattering on dark hair maybe a lighter shade of your natural color would be nice on you, and remember if you dont like it you can dye it back and a hair regrowth program is rogaine or you may want a generic brand

but a professional always know best DONT EVER USE SUN IN IVE DONE IT BEFORE AND IT LOOKS TERRIBLE JUST DONT DO IT!!!!

Those chemicals like highlight dyes and perms are DEATH to African American hair. They deprive the hair of it's natural moisture and makes it prone to dryness and breaking.

Cellophane is the safest way to go because they aren't PERMANENT. They wash out with water over time.

I don't really like highlights....unless they are professionally done but even then...who really has brown hair with blond streaks ?

Highlights won't take your hair out. I have copper colored highlights (my summer color). During the colder, winter months, I apply a darker temp color on top of my highlights. Of course, my hairdresser does all of this.

If highlights are maintained well then they are safe. You need to make sure you get a deep conditioning treatment every week and protein treatment once a month. You can also try a leave in conditioner. Treating your hair keeps it from breaking off and drying out. Bleach tends to dry the hair out and that can cause breakage. That's why it is important to keep your hair moisturized. Also, try a light moisturizer like Pink Oil. Oh, someone up here recommended Sun-in. PLEASE DO NOT USE SUN-IN lightener on your hair. Its not made for black hair because we get relaxers often. If used on relaxed hair it will break off really bad and shed a lot. Trust me....I know from experience!

African american hair is not made for chemicals. Highlights use bleach and bleach will eat up and mess up your hair. My hair is like mixed people. because i have a creole and indian origin. but don't unless you plan on taking care of your hair really good after you die it. I don't recommend it.

Is highlights safe for african american hair.?

do not do it
